GPP - Buffalo at Edmonton 12-28-2010

The marathon of eight Sportsnet games in a row comes to a close this evening. I'm almost going to be confused watching an Oilers broadcast without a GPP. Take a rest Geno, you've earned it.

GPP - Edmonton at Vancouver 12-26-2010

I think Gene was suffering from Christmas dinner hangover. One GPP made the grade (barely) this evening.

Understandable, I'm still tired from the holiday and boxing day rush myself and I didn't have to fly anywhere.

Boxing Day

Format change

After some reflection and speaking with a few folks who read my blog, the consensus seems to be less is more. Going forward I'm only going to be posting the GPP's I consider to be Prince Of Puns worthy. If they aren't really good (or extremely bad) I'm not going to be posting them. I'm hoping this should clean things up a bit.

Like the idea? Hate it? Still mad you got a lump of coal under the Christmas tree this year? Think Gene should have shown his underwear in tonight's Canucks game? As always, feel free to leave a comment.

GPP - Edmonton at Los Angeles 12-23-2010

Wow, busy night on the GPP front. Tons of video tonight.

The only thing better than Gene in a Santa suit is Gene in a hotdog costume (seriously if someone has the clip or even a picture, it would make my Christmas).

Well done Geno, Merry Christmas everyone!

GPP pick of the night: The Santa Suit
If it wasn't for Gene being dressed head to toe in a Santa costume Renney's beans one would have been a shoe in. Sounds like something my dad would tell me to scare me into being good.

GPP - Edmonton at San Jose 12-21-2010

Geno's game was much like the Oilers tonight. Started out strong but ultimately came up a tad short when the dust settled. All things considered though a solid effort by both.

GPP pick of the night: Blackjack line
Prop, solid puns and a bonus pun by Kevin Quinn makes this one a no brainier for the GPP pick of the night

GPP - Columbus at Edmonton 12-16-2010

Nice to see Geno pay some well deserved tribute to the Oilers former captain. The last couple of years weren't pretty for anyone but that doesn't change what a great Oiler and member of the community he was. Sail on mon capiton, sail on.

GPP pick of the night: Bob Stauffer's facial expression on the Chemistry pun.

GPP - Toronto at Edmonton 12-14-2010

Did Gene help pick the name of the new Oilers Cheer Team or something? The Octane? Really? Oh well at least they are easier on the eyes than Gene. Fortunately he didn't miss the chance to have them involved in not only one, but two GPP's. Give the fans what they want Geno. Horrible puns, good looking women and of course props whenever possible.

GPP pick of the night: Octane Cheerleaders part deux
I have a soft spot for props and the Colby Armstrong one was full of them but how can you go wrong with Cheerleaders? Answer. You can't. Well that I loved Kevin Quinn's comment at the end "Sorry Gene, did you say something?".

On a final note, to all the folks so strongly opposed to The Octane Cheerleaders (horrible name aside), honestly relax. These women are not being taken advantage of, they obviously enjoy the spotlight and attention so let them have their fun. The fans at Rexall Place pay good money to see an unfortunately lackluster product some nights. Even on a good night there are some slow times. If this gives certain folks something else to watch during the TV timeouts other than people diving over one another for free t-shirts or yelling at an imaginary noise meter in a vain hope they will win a free 75 cent bag of chips then so be it.

If you've managed to stick around this long even after my rant above, here is a bonus pre-game GPP (I don't often get a chance to watch the pre-game) sent in by the same chap that came to the rescue and provided some emergency footage last game.

GPP - Vancouver at Edmonton 12-12-2010

Ran into some technical difficulties last night, well that or I did something wrong when setting the recording. It's less embarrassing to just blame technology so let's say it was the PVR's fault.

Fortunately SnooPac from HF Boards had recorded at least one clip and sent it to me. Thanks a ton, hopefully tomorrow nights recording goes as planned and I'll have the full Gene lineup. Till then, I leave you with this gem.

Update: SnooPac was able to track down two more clips from the game. Good stuff (finding the clips, the puns themselves are groan out loud bad). Thanks again!

GPP - Oilers vs Lightning 12-10-2010

For the first 8 games of Gene-mas we've got a three pack this evening. Unfortunately I forgot to set my recording a couple minutes early and missed a few seconds of the opening. A sin I know, but I'm still new to this gig with this being the 3rd game I've GPP'ed. Lesson learned though, let's move forward into the holiday season and hope that Geno will pick up some Oilers Cheer Team action next broadcast.

Classic Principe Moments II: The Jacket

I'm pretty sure I've seen my grandpa wear this jacket before. Fitting since he is the only one I know that could give Gene a run for his money with puns.

Classic Principe Moments I: (New) Jersey (Devils) Shore

I don't know if I've ever seen a real Italian give such a bad Italian impersonation, or even a non Italian now that I think of it. Perhaps that's part of what makes this clip so great.

I wouldn't have known this was a poke at Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino from the TV series Jersey Shore unless my better half let me know when I showed it to her (really, I swear).  Well done Gene'o, well done.

By the way, thanks to Marc for sending in the clip. Much appreciated.

Sadly we still have another 5 nights till the next Sportsnet broadcast when the 8 games of Gene-mas begin. If anyone else has any suggestions for another Classic GPP Moment to fill the void please leave a comment or send me an email.

Edmonton at Toronto December 2 2010

Gene was pulling out all the stops tonight with five jaw dropping GPP's. The last three were especially groan worthy. I often wonder if he sits in his hotel room for hours on end trying to come up with this stuff while everyone else is out having fun.

GPP pick of the night, Pun 2: The Vest

On a side note, I've decided not to type out the puns going forward for two reasons:
1. The art of a really bad pun is all in the delivery. This is not captured very well when just reading the pun in text form.
2. It takes a long time and it's already hectic enough getting the videos uploaded. If I felt it had more value I might make the time, but I don't think it does. Agree? Disagree? Thought Justin Beiber was a brand of womens undergarments? Leave a comment and let me know.

The next two Oilers games are on CBC and then TSN. So Gene won't be up to bat again until Friday December 10 when the Tampa Bay Lightning visit Rexall place. That's a lot of Gene free time between now and then so perhaps we'll take a look and see if we can dig up some classic Gene moments on YouTube. If you have any favorites, please feel free to leave them in the comments section.

If you start to get a little weak in the knees from Gene withdrawls between now and December 10, don't fret. There is a streak of 8, count them EIGHT Sportsnet broadcasts in a row leading through Christmas till December 28th. Forget the 12 days of Christmas, how about the 8 games of Gene-mas (groans all around).

Edmonton at Ottawa November 29 2010

I couldn't have asked for a much better set of puns for my first GPP video post. Gene is money in the bank with a pun trifecta in Canada's national capital city.

GPP pick of the night, Pun 1: The nations capital (barely beat out Pun 2, the stache comment put it over the edge).

Pun 1: The nations capital
Gene: "It is in Ottawa where you will find parliament hill and the leaders of our great nation. Edmonton is working on their own leaders. Whether they wear the C, or fit the future to a tee. You always keep an eye out for those with special skills and they’ve even thrown in some foreign content to help out. As you can never have enough players stached away to do whats best for the nation of Oiler believers. Tonight it is a tough hill to climb as Edmonton begins their three game Eastern swing in the capital of Canada."

Pun 2: Politically correct
Gene: "We’re in Ottawa so we have to be politically correct. Upstairs we go to two guys who’s wardrobe is Conservative, who’s opinions are Liberal and who go to the washroom before the game. That way they don’t have to ND....Pee!"

Pun 3: Alfredsson and Federer
Gene: "When Daniel Alfredsson hit the 1000 game plateau for his career his wife decided to setup a trip. The trip was to the all England club where the two of them enjoyed the Wimbledon. Now not only did they watch some great tennis but the Alfredssons had the chance to meet Roger Federer who on again off again is the number one player in the world and they had a chance to spend about 20 minutes talking tennis with him but they were pretty quiet about it because they didn’t want to make a racquet."

GPP most wanted list

Topping my most wanted list is a video or picture of Gene wearing that hot dog costume around Halloween a year or two back interviewing Kelly Buchberger. I'm paraphrasing here but the line was something like 'this is a hotdog, interviewing a burger' *groans all around*. Well done Gene'o, well done.

I've setup the PVR for tonight's broadcast so here is hoping Gene drops at least one epic GPP for the first video post. Until I figure out a better way I'll just be video taping pointing the camera at the screen. It'll do for now anyway.

So it begins

Me and a few cohorts were chatting about the epic nature of the "Gene Principe pun™" (hence forth refereed to as GPP). Puns so bad they are good. Puns so corny they pop. Puns so amazingly horrible they make you want to curl up into the fetal position and cry. Puns so shocking that only a Princ(ip)e could come up with them.

I did some searching around the interwebs and was surprised (mortified really) that there was no GPP resource available for his growing throng of fans. So here we are. The idea behind this blog is to track GPP's on Rogers Sportsnet West broadcasts of Edmonton Oilers games. I'll try to post a video of as many GPP's as I can after each Oilers Sportsnet broadcast. I've been known to have the attention span of a ferret so we'll see how long this actually lasts, but if there is enough interest I'll give an honest effort.

If you have any to GPP's to share, please leave a comment or send me an email and I'll get it posted ASAP.

Welcome to Prince of Puns. Let the madness begin.
